He Will Come For Me (1/1)
Title: He Will Come For Me
Pairing: Spike/Buffy (sort of)
Rating: G
Summary: It's Buffy's big day... will Spike be there?
A/N: Thanks to [info]slaymesoftly for the beta!

Buffy stared at the neatly lettered calligraphy and wondered briefly if she’d lost her mind.

There was no way he would come.

She’d gotten the address from Angel, and from the resigned tone of his voice as he recited it, he was obviously expecting her to use it for a very different purpose. But then, he’d been unconscious for several days after that battle in the alley, and so he’d missed the arguing and the accusations. Somehow, everything with Spike always ended up in a fight, and things had been said that they couldn’t take back, until there was nothing left to do but exchange sullen goodbyes and go their separate ways. She didn’t know how often Angel talked to him – well, often enough to have a current address, at least – but clearly they never talked about her, or Angel would realize how frigid their relationship was now.

There was no way he would show up. Not after the things they’d said to one another. He’d probably take the invitation as an insult, as her rubbing salt in the wound. “Come witness my perfect day. I invite you to be on the outside looking in on my shiny, happy, normal life.”

But maybe, just maybe, he’d see it for what it really was.

*****

He hadn’t RSVPed. But then, who RSVPs for a wedding reception when they plan to interrupt the ceremony and abscond with the bride before the vows are exchanged? Did she really expect him to write that on the card, right under the little boxes to check for steak or pasta?

It didn’t matter. He would come if he loved her. He had to. He’d fought so long and so hard for her love, he couldn’t – wouldn’t – let it end like this.

*****

“So, are you excited?” Dawn asked, fiddling with Buffy’s curls until they were arranged just so. The way she was practically bouncing off the walls made it clear how she felt about her sister getting married.

“Nervous, mostly,” Buffy admitted.

She knew it was a long shot. She knew there was a decent chance Spike would misinterpret her gesture and not show up at all. But somehow she’d managed to work herself up to believing that he’d be there, that he would understand how mere words could never suffice to fix everything between them. She needed the grand gesture, needed him to realize that he couldn’t live without her.

It’s not like she wasn’t prepared with her own grand gesture. She was filled with giddiness at the thought of rushing down the aisle and being swept into his arms, forsaking her not-yet-taken vows to ride off into the sunset with him. Figuratively, of course, unless he’d gotten one of those cars with the sunlight-proof windows that Angel rode around in these days.

“That’s just the pre-wedding butterflies,” Dawn assured her. “You’ll be fine once you’re out there.”

Seated at the vanity, Buffy gave her reflection a hesitant smile. “I hope so.”

*****

Her eyes met Giles’ briefly as the wedding march began, and her grip tightened around his elbow. Slowly, they made their way down the aisle, a broad smile permanently affixed on her face. She could see her friends already assembled around the altar, Willow, Xander, and her sister, all beaming proudly. They wanted so much for her to be happy, to finally find the everlasting love that had eluded them all for so long, living on the Hellmouth.

And she wanted to be happy, too, wanted to want this so badly. Taking her place next to Michael, she felt a frisson of excitement, and for a moment, she thought maybe Dawn had been right. But as the minister droned on, she found herself trembling in anticipation of one particular line.

“If anyone knows of any reason…”

He will come for me, she thought, channeling Buttercup in her calmness and her certainty that her love would arrive in time to save her. Granted, this wasn’t exactly a “marry me or die” situation; she’d accepted Michael’s proposal willingly. And why shouldn’t she? He was good and kind, and he made her laugh, and the sex was decent, and he didn’t care that she could bench press three times his weight. And he loved her, and she’d never gotten that right, not once in her entire life, but this time she would do it. For once in her life, she would commit to someone who loved her.

But she couldn’t stop hoping.

“…why these two should not be wed…”

She braced herself for his grand entrance, crashing down the aisle bellowing about how she could never marry this limp sod standing next to her, because her heart burned with a fiery passion for him and him alone.

“…speak now or forever hold your peace.”

She held her breath, waiting.

Silence.

As the minister proceeded with the ceremony, she wanted to tell him to wait, that Spike was never on time for anything, but instead she hollowly repeated the vows she was expected to recite. The words “I now pronounce you man and wife” echoed in her ears, but there was only one thought in her mind.

He hadn’t come.

Clearly, Buffy is entirely too young to enter into such a contract. Brother! Sounds like she hasn't learned anything since she was 16...

Teeny tiny: forever hold your piece oughta be "peace".

Well, that's our Buffy... still looking for the fairy tale romance.

And thanks... I've seen it both ways enough times to be confused. :)

I know! :( Patti and I talked about Buffy's poor jilted groom, but it's not like it's the first time she's been callous with someone's heart...

LOL, no happy endings here. In fact, subverting the happy ending was exactly what I set out to do with this fic (teaser for upcoming meta post, lol).

Buffy setting this all up for Spike's benefit shows she doesn't know her vampire very well, though the buildup of hope had me hoping, too. What a painful, heartbreaking wedding. I wonder who this Michael really is. Her lukewarm reasons for acceptance of his proposal were almost cruel, and the she's staging the marriage for the benefit of an entirely different man. Buffy's not getting back into Heaven with this kind of behavior.

I can't believe her friends are all happy at her choice. They know Buffy about as well as she knows Spike.

I can just imagine Spike looking at that invitation and just crumbling. Heartbreak all around.
eowyn_315[info]eowyn_315 on December 30th, 2008 04:51 am (UTC)
Mmmm, I'd give Buffy a little more credit. She's not setting this all up for Spike's benefit. She really does intend to marry Michael, but on a whim she thinks, "What if I got the fairy tale happy ending?" with her true love swooping in to whisk her away. And of course, we all know how hard it would be for Buffy to put Spike behind her, so that little seed of a fantasy grows and grows until she's actually expecting it to come true. She let herself get carried away (much like I was hoping readers would get swept up along with her), and she got jolted harshly back to reality when Spike didn't show.

lusciousxander[info]lusciousxander on December 30th, 2008 11:36 am (UTC)
That's so Buffy. Playing with someone else's heart just to get another to notice (When She Was Bad), or just to feel (S6 and S8). Poor Michael. Sigh.
eowyn_315: Buffy/Angel silhouette[info]eowyn_315 on December 30th, 2008 02:19 pm (UTC)
Hmm, I don't think that's really what she was doing. As I mentioned in another comment, she's not doing this just for Spike - she accepted the proposal and planned this wedding with the full intention of going through with it. But somewhere along the line, her fantasy of Spike coming back took over.

It's obvious that Michael is second-best, and she'd rather be with Spike, but the logical part of her knows it's over with Spike, and she's trying to move on and be happy. It's the not-so-logical part that won't let him go.

If I were to compare it to anything from the series, I'd compare it to her relationship with Angel. Despite all the evidence that it's not going to work out, and that she'll probably end up broken-hearted, she can't stop clinging to her fairy tale romance.
lusciousxander[info]lusciousxander on December 30th, 2008 03:34 pm (UTC)
I'm guessing Michael is like Scott Hope from S3. :) She just settles for him because she can't have Angel.
eowyn_315: Blue Buffy[info]eowyn_315 on December 30th, 2008 07:00 pm (UTC)
Maybe, although Scott Hope was pretty trivial (they dated for what - a few weeks max?), and Michael is someone's she actually marrying. But then again, wasn't everyone she dated a second-best because she couldn't have Angel? Owen, Scott, Parker, Riley... Spike might break the pattern, but I think that has more to do with Buffy maturing than Spike being special.

Poor Buffy. Starting her new life with regrets.

I think Buffy will always have regrets... she'd rather suffer in silence than go after what she wants.

Hee! Actually, I got the idea for this well before Christmas, but I've been sitting on it for almost two months because I was just too busy to devote time to it. I never turn down sugar, though, especially if it comes in the form of a cookie. :)

The Deadly Hook: Spike's fashionable neckline by earth_ve[info]thedeadlyhook on December 31st, 2008 09:25 pm (UTC)
Yowch. That hurts. It's hard to know whether to feel glad that Buffy's finally feeling optimistic enough to dream of a reunion, or sad that the only reason she is dreaming of it is because some part of her realizes it won't happen - thus, the going through with the wedding. Bleak.

It does make me wonder about a Spike-POV companion piece, but then that'd really be bleak, no doubt.
eowyn_315[info]eowyn_315 on January 1st, 2009 04:33 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I don't know how much optimism there is in Buffy's dreaming. It's not like she has any real evidence that Spike still loves her and would be willing to make things right between them... if she did, she could've just talked to him instead of hoping for a big show at her wedding.

As for a Spike companion piece, I figure it would probably go much the same way - if Spike thought Buffy loved him, he'd be willing to give it a try, but since he didn't show up, I think we can infer what he thinks... After all, it's not really worth it to make a spectacle of yourself at someone's wedding if you don't believe it'll do any good.
The One Who Isn't Chosen: will7[info]gabrielleabelle on January 5th, 2009 06:14 am (UTC)
....but Spike always comes!

Okay, so I knew the end cause I'd read your meta on endings first. It's still depressing. I can relate so much to Buffy. Doing something kinda over the top to provoke a guy into a reaction, and then not getting anything from it. One of the worst feelings in the world. Course, I never got married while doing that...
eowyn_315[info]eowyn_315 on January 5th, 2009 03:03 pm (UTC)
LOL, cheater! But yeah, I've definitely done over the top things to get a guy's attention, and it always backfires. And I don't think I can put into words how much I feel like an idiot when it doesn't work the way I want it to, lol. (Haven't tried getting married, though... maybe that's next.) So I do feel pretty bad for the Buffster here. Thanks for the review!

Hee! I am a heartbreaker. :) Thanks for the comments! As for the marriage, I kind of want to say that Buffy would stubbornly stick it out, even if it's not what she really wanted. That'd be ironic - of all the relationships she's had, she finally commits to one, and it's this guy.

Oh, and I'm convinced he'll get to her before the wedding night. So that's alright then...
